Rest of UKAcademic, Consultant, Educator, Media/Press/Journalist, public speakerCreative and performing artsacademic/expert media/journalist screen and film professional/ company/charitye-mail, linkedinI'm an academic currently working at The Open University as Senior Lecturer in Film & Media. Drawing on expertise at the intersections of film, history, and geography, I'm the Principal Investigator of the Environmental Impact of Filmmaking project, which has been funded by the AHRC. The project uses Star Wars as its primary case study to investigate the carbon emissions of various prop and costume making practices, and to consider how location shoots affect local communities and wildlife. With the support of research associate Siti Syuhaida Mohamed Yunus, the project's prop and costume case studies have drawn attention to carbon-intense digital making (e.g., a CGI Artoo Detoo), the importance of reusing materials, and the need for corporate accountability in the merchandising of intellectual property such as lightsabers. I've also traced the economic and cultural histories of particular materials (aluminium, silk) to demonstrate how global distribution networks for the screen industries perpetuate colonial practices. An online archive of Star Wars practitioner interviews (which address the environment and sustainability issues from 1977 to the present day) will be available in due course, alongside a range of other resources. In thinking about location shoots, I'm examining the use and representations of land via community surveys, and considering ecological impacts on both plants and animals. I'm developing a short film that explores the locations via themes of nature, industrialisation, and transformation. As a film journalist with broadcast experience, I am happy to contribute to public discussions about film and the environment. I also work with a range of industry and cultural organisations to encourage more sustainable practices and can be contacted in this capacity, too. academic consultant educator media-press-journalist public-speakercreative-and-performing-arts

GlasgowAcademic, Consultant, EducatorEngineering and technologyacademic/expert media/journalist screen and film professional/ company/charitye-mail, linkedinI am a Professor at the University of Glasgow working on forecasting and analytics, particularly those which empower decision-makers with uncertainty information allowing them to make better decisions and control risk. I'm interested in the production, end-use and evaluation of probabilistic forecasts, and often work at the intersection of statistics, engineering, and meteorology. Over the past 10 years I have developed novel methodologies for forecasting wind and solar power, energy prices and demand (and occasionally other things too), and associated decision-making problems including energy trading, power system operation and asset management. As well as improving forecast quality, I'm interested in the effective communication of complex forecast information, which is crucial to support decision-makers, especially as our energy systems become ever more complex and weather-dependent. Several electricity generators and network operators currently use forecasts and decision-support tools I helped develop.academic consultant educatorengineering-and-technology

I've spent 20 years at Glasgow School of Art, Cairngorms National Park Authority and Heriot-Watt University asking what we can all do, whatever our discipline or sector, about the social and economic issues that affect our environment. At GSA I'm the in-house environmentalist, working through the curriculum on how we can as designers redesign our society and economy, and as artists how we can emotionally connect everyone to the need for urgent change. We need a positive, future vision which art can provide. We need to care and we need the agency to change. We need the ideas for change in place, and creative people are key to this process. I support charities through my fundraising and report writing expertise, and sit on the Board of theatre group Vanishing Point. I talk regularly to artists in Ireland through Visual Artists Ireland. Whenever possible, I outreach to arts and science disciplines at universities across Scotland, asking students what they can achieve as business people, engineers, historians, psychologists and in many other subject areas in addressing the crises we face. I work closely with the Climate Psychology Alliance and helped form the Scottish branch. With a BSc in Rural Development, an MA in Global Development Management, and a Pg Cert. in Teaching the Creative Disciplines, I take a broad interest in how economics, society and nature interact. And how humans must change to survive. I am not academic staff, but as a development professional have a unique position and approach to working with and across academic disciplines, holding tutorials with students, being involved in their projects, supporting their well-being, and giving them the agency to take action in their own field.educator industry-professional practitioner public-speaker third-sector-professionalarchitecture-and-design creative-and-performing-arts development-studies drama-and-theatre-studies earth-science economics education environmental-studies-and-forestry family-and-consumer-science geography-and-human-geography history political-science-and-international-studies psychology public-policy visual-arts

City of EdinburghAcademicLinguisticsacademic/expertphone, e-mailBernadette O’Rourke is Professor of Sociolinguistics and Hispanic Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow. Her research sits within the broad area of sociolinguistics and the sociology of language and focuses on the political and social meanings of language and their influence on society. She was Chair of the EU COST Action IS1306 entitled New Speakers in a Multilingual Europe: Opportunities and Challenges. Her recent co-authored publications include New Speakers of Irish in the Global Context: New revival? (Routledge 2020) and the Palgrave Handbook of Minority Languages and Communities (Palgrave 2019) which won the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Book Prize in 2020. She is currently completing a new book from a Leverhulme funded project entitled A new agenda in minority language sociolinguistics: rethinking contemporary language revitalisation (Cambridge University Press). Her current work explores multidimensional approaches to multilingual sustainability. She examines how globalisation and increased movement of people have re-shaped the value of different languages and ways of speaking. For some commentators, globalisation is seen as key factor in the ‘dissolution’ of certain languages and diversity more broadly. This is by no means always the case. Languages are frequently taken up and used by new types of speakers, for new purposes and in new spaces. Her work examines this dynamic and its largely under-explored potential for the future of diversity more broadly. It builds on a broader programme of research as part of a British Academy Fellowship entitled New Geographies of Language in Minority Language Sociolinguistics. Existing research in minority language sociolinguistics, has hinted at the role played by space, context and environment in relation to language acquisition and use. It has not always explored such themes thoroughly or with reference to contemporary geographical debates. Similarly, the field of urban studies, sociology and geography have not always paid enough attention to language and multilingualism. Her work aims is to develop a multidimensional approach to language revitalisation and minority language sociolinguistics by bringing these and other fields into dialogue. Through her work, Bernie seeks to provide answers to key social questions such as to how to support linguistic diversity and multilingual sustainability in an age of globalisation as well as practical ways in which urban planners can engage more systematically with language issues in highly complex urban environments not only in Europe but around the world. academiclinguistics
